“Have you seen Ellie yet?” Jeb asks me when he wanders into the lodge. He’s been looking at her differently this week. They went to the harvest festival recently, and I suspect he’s trying to show her that he cares about her as more than just the handyman who helps out around the place.

I shake my head and tell him that I think she’s still working. He scowls but disappears down the hallway, leaving me to work in peace.

For the next three hours, I focus on the computer. It should be easy admin work I’m doing, but nothing is coming together tonight. The system keeps crashing, and I’m having trouble concentrating because I can’t get the look of hurt on Gage’s face off my mind.

I’m almost finished when Ellie appears looking frazzled and overwhelmed. “Long day?”

“The chairlift quit working, the stew for dinner burned. I dropped three plates. It’s been a mess,” she answers. We’re more than just boss and employee. Ellie and I are friends which means we’re always open to listening to each other vent. “What about you?”

I glance down at Henry, feeling my heart warm when I see his sleeping face. Despite the fire, he had a great night. “He seemed happy.”

I want him to always have that with the sexy bartender. I want them to be close and that means I need to forget about the fact that I want Gage. That I crave his kisses or love dreaming with him or want to imagine living on a little farm with him.

“What about his mama?” Ellie probes. She always seems to have a knack for seeing through me and knowing what my hurting heart needs. But even as close as I am to her, I’ve never told her anything about my past.

I look away from her knowing gaze. “Gage asked me out.”

“I’ll watch Henry,” she volunteers quickly. There’s a smile in her voice.

She’s been hoping that this thing between us would blossom into something more. I don’t have the mental fortitude to untangle everything tonight so instead, I say, “I told him no.”

“Gage likes you. You like him,” she protests.

I shut down the computer and adjust a basket of pens on the lobby desk to keep my hands busy. We might like each other, and his kisses might make me long to have him drag me to the nearest bed and have his way with me. But the chemistry between us will eventually die down if I just ignore it long enough. I’m too tired to explain this to her so instead I gather Henry up into my arms.

He murmurs sleepily and buries his face in my neck. The simple motion fills me with contentment. “Henry looks at him as a father figure. I can’t mess that up.”

Before she can argue with me, I grab my purse and head down the hall to our room. I’m making the right decision for all of us. I know I am. I just wish it didn’t hurt so much.
